faqs on salsa/cha cha classes faqs on holistic classes faqs on misc items

Here's a list of questions commonly asked by our students. Hope the answers will help you enjoy your participation in our classes.

For Salsa & Street Cha Cha classes
  1. Do I need to bring a partner?
You don't need a partner as we practise partner rotation in class. This is because, Salsa and Cha Cha, being partner dances, and you would gain more by dancing with different people as each partner will execute the same move differently.

  2. Do I need to buy proper dance shoes?
Proper dance shoes are a big investment for most of us. As such, we would recommend that, at the very beginning, to get a comfortable pair of shoes that are not too sticky. For ladies, please ensure that your shoes/heels are secured around the ankle. Definitely no flip-flops or slip-ons for both gentlemen and ladies.

  3. What should I wear to class?
We recommend that you pick attire that you are comfortable in and that you can move in. Do try to avoid extremely casual attire (e.g. singlet, shorts).

  4. Do I need to rotate/change partners in class?
Rotation is not mandatory. However, we strongly recommend that you do rotate partners so as to gain the maximum benefit in class as different people will execute the same move slightly differently. By rotating in class, you will be able to experience these differences first hand in a learning environment.

  5. How are the Salsa and Street Cha Cha courses structured?
Each course is progressive and consists of 6 1-hour lessons with each subsequent lesson building on the one before it.

  6. What happens if I miss the first lesson, can I still join the course?
Yes you can. We still allow enrolment into a course at the second lesson. However, should you also miss the second, you are then advised to try for another course.

  7. What happens if I miss a class?
Firstly, we always review the previous lesson in each class as a form of reinforcement. This will help you alleviate the miss somewhat. Secondly, you are welcome to repeat the course for free once. Subsequent repeats can be done at 50% of the regular course fee. Note that your loyalty discount does not apply on this repeat rate. The free refreshers and repeat discounts do not apply at the following levels as these are on-going courses with each course having different content from the one before.
    • Salsa On1 Level 3 and 4
    • Salsa On2 Level 3
    • Street Cha Cha Level 3

  8. I have taken Salsa/Cha Cha classes before; do I still have to start at Salsa/Cha Cha Level 1?
Please let us know details of the classes you have previously taken so that we can best advise you on which level would be most suitable for you. In addition to this, it would be even better if you could come arrange to come down to see us so that we can better assess for you as to which level would be most suitable for you.

  9. I have never done Salsa before; do I start with Salsa On1 or On2?
We would recommend you begin with Salsa On1 as this style is the predominant style in Singapore and thus would allow you to start social dancing faster. However, you are more than welcome to start with the On2 style which is fast becoming quite popular in Singapore.

  10. What is the minimum age in order to be eligible for the class?
We would recommend that you be at least 15-16 years old before attempting the class. For children/teenagers younger than 15 years old, if there is sufficient interest, we will consider starting a Youth course.

  11. Do you offer trial classes?
    No we don’t.

  12. What is the price for the course?
The price for each course is S$90 for adults (i.e. S$15 per class) and S$60 for full-time students in a local educational institution* and NSF (i.e. those currently serving their NS). Do note that Studio UP vouchers cannot be used for payment for Salsa and Cha Cha classes.

    *Please note:
    • This rate is available to students from any local educational institution including private colleges.
    • It is only applicable for those studying up to their undergraduate degrees. Students who are studying for their post-graduate degrees are not eligible for this rate.
    • Proof of eligibility (e.g. valid student card, valid NSF ID) must be presented at the point of payment.

  13. I’ve just graduated/finished my NS, does this mean I’ve to pay the adult rate now?
No. We will still charge you the student rate for at least 6 months after your graduation/completion. Just bring your ID along as proof.

  14. Can I just take one class?
Yes but it is not advisable to as firstly, the class-by-class rate is at S$20 per class for adults and S$15 per class for students/NSF. Secondly, as each course is progressive, it is much better for you if you can commit for the entire course as it you would be able to pick up the dance much faster.

Please note that the option to take a single class is only available for the 1st 2 lessons of a course. Should somebody wish to take a walk-in class at the 3rd or subsequent lesson, permission must first be obtained from the instructor as he/she will need to assess if you are able to keep up with the class.

  15. Do you offer private Salsa/Street Cha Cha lessons?
Yes we do. This can be on an individual basis, a couple or a group of friends/colleagues who would prefer to take Salsa or Street Cha Cha lessons together. Please contact us for a quotation.

For Holistic classes
  1. What should I wear to class?
We recommend that you pick attire that you are comfortable in and that you can move in. It should not be too loose though as some of the movements in the class may be hindered by loose or baggy clothing. Do try to avoid extremely casual attire (e.g. singlet, shorts).

  2. Do I need to bring a mat?
You don't need a mat as we will provide mats for the class. However, if you have a personal mat and would prefer to use that, then by all means! :)

  3. I've never done Pilates/Yoga before; can I still join the class?
Definitely! Our Pilates classes (and also our Yoga and Stretch classes) are open classes where, in one class, our instructor is able to cater for practitioners of varying levels.

Miscellaneous
  1. How do I pay for class?
For Salsa and Street Cha Cha courses, payment can be done by cash or by direct bank transfer (via Internet Banking or ATM). If you would like to transfer the payment, please contact us at info@dansflavastudios.com to get our account information. Upon receipt of your transfer, we will email you a confirmation.

For the holistic classes, payment is in the form of Studio UP vouchers which can be purchased from Studio UP. Please refer to their website for more details.

  2. I have taken classes previously at DansFlava Studios/Studio UP; am I eligible for any discounts on my new course?
If you are signing up for a new Salsa or Street Cha Cha course (and not a repeat or refresher), you will be eligible to a 10% discount off your course fee if you've previously taken Salsa or Street Cha Cha lessons from us.

If you are student of one of the courses run at Studio UP e.g. Argentine Tango, Pilates etc, you only need to show proof of purchase of Studio UP vouchers in order to be eligible for a 10% discount of our Salsa or Street Cha Cha courses. However, this discount is not cumulative i.e. if you have taken Salsa On1 Level 1 with us and Argentine Tango at Studio UP and would now like to sign up for Street Cha Cha Level 1, you would only be eligible for 10% off the course price and not 20%.

However, at this point in time, the reverse is not applicable i.e. Salsa students will not enjoy a discount on purchasing Studio UP vouchers other than the bulk discounts indicated here.

  3. My friends and I are interested in a dance that is not currently offered at DansFlava Studios or Studio Up; what can we do?
Please contact us on your requests and, depending on response, studio and instructor availability, we will look into the possibility of starting that class for you. However, each request will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  4. In what languages are classes conducted in?
All classes at DansFlava Studios are conducted in English.
